Link juice is the informal, operator-shorthand term for the ranking authority that flows through a hyperlink from one page to another. It is the dinner-table version of Link Equity, which is itself a more accessible version of the original PageRank flow concept.

The metaphor works because authority behaves like fluid. A page accumulates link juice from inbound links, distributes it through its outbound links, and the cycle continues across the link graph. Pages with many outbound links dilute the juice each link carries — this is the dampening principle inherited from PageRank's original mathematical model.

Two practical takeaways follow. First, internal-linking architecture matters. A page that is only reachable through a footer link three levels deep receives little juice from the homepage. The same page promoted in the main navigation receives substantially more, which is why high-priority commercial pages typically sit one or two clicks from the homepage. Second, outbound link discipline matters. A page with 200 outbound links passes a small slice of juice to each. The same page with 20 carefully chosen outbound links passes a larger slice to each — useful when you want to amplify pages on your own site or trusted partners.

Historically, operators used techniques like "Nofollow sculpting" to direct juice flow within a site by selectively no-following internal links. Google neutralised this in 2009 by changing how nofollow internal links are counted — they now consume a share of the page's outbound flow without passing it along. Modern juice-shaping is done by deciding which links to include at all, not by attribute manipulation.

The term "link juice" is sometimes dismissed as unprofessional jargon, and many SEOs prefer "link equity" in formal documents. Both refer to the same underlying mechanic. Whatever the name, the operator's job is the same: earn it from credible inbound sources, conserve it through clean internal-link architecture, and avoid bleeding it to low-value outbound destinations.
