Domain Rating (DR) is Ahrefs' proprietary metric for the strength of a domain's backlink profile, expressed on a logarithmic 0–100 scale. It is the most widely tracked authority metric in agency and operator circles, in part because Ahrefs' crawler is one of the largest in the industry.

DR is computed from the quantity of unique referring domains pointing to the target and the DR of those referring domains themselves — a recursive, PageRank-style calculation. Critically, DR does not factor in Dofollow versus Nofollow status the way some operators assume: Ahrefs treats the link graph as a single weighted network with link attributes used to adjust flow rather than gate it.

DR and Domain Authority often correlate within five to ten points but diverge in two predictable cases. First, sites with a small number of very strong referring domains tend to score higher on DR than on DA because Ahrefs' formula rewards link quality steeply. Second, sites with broad but shallow link profiles (many low-authority referrers) tend to score higher on DA, which historically gave more credit to volume.

Because DR is logarithmic, a site moving from DR 40 to DR 50 has not "added a third more authority" — it has roughly doubled the cumulative weighted reach of its referring domains. Movements of one or two points are normal monthly drift. Movements of five or more points usually indicate either a major link campaign landing, an index refresh, or Lost Backlink on a high-DR referrer.

DR is not a Google ranking factor. It is a useful proxy because the same backlink data feeds Google's own algorithms, but the mapping is loose. Use DR for competitive benchmarking, link-prospect qualification, and trend monitoring — not as a key performance indicator in isolation.

For prospecting, a common rule of thumb is to target referring domains with DR within twenty points of your own. Lower-DR placements still pass Link Equity and contribute to topical signal; they just move the needle on DR itself less visibly.
